Presenting to you, the Footy Simulator xG Model!

"Expected goals (or xG) measures the quality of a chance by calculating the likelihood that it will be scored by using information on similar shots in the past. We use nearly one million shots from Opta’s historical database to measure xG on a scale between zero and one, where zero represents a chance that is impossible to score, and one represents a chance that a player would be expected to score every single time" (Opta).

The Footy Simulator xG Model includes variables such as:

  • Distance to goal
  • Angle to goal
  • Whether the shot is a header or footed shot
  • Whether the shot is from a set play
  • Whether the shot is a penalty
  • Pressure on the shooter
  • Shot clarity (are there players in the way?)
  • Goalkeeper positioning

However, the model provided only accounts for distance to goal, angle to goal, goalkeeper positioning and the shot type.

Move the green ball around the pitch to get the xG value at the given position. Click on the ball to toggle the shot type.
