The clearest sign of where this technology is headed arrived just ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. FIFA has rolled out an upgraded version of SAOT that shrinks its sensitivity tenfold — from a 50-centimeter threshold down to just 10 centimeters. Instead of assistant referees waiting for a VAR review to confirm what they suspected, the new system sends a real-time audio alert straight to their earpiece the moment a clearly offside player is detected, letting them raise the flag immediately rather than allowing play to continue into potentially dangerous territory.
That last point matters more than it might seem. Officials have historically been instructed to keep their flags down during marginal offside situations so VAR can review the passage of play afterward — but that delay has occasionally meant collisions or injuries occurring during a phase of play that, in hindsight, should have already been stopped.
